VUJC Land Stewardship Initiative

The Dubois County SWCD has recently entered into a partnership with Vincennes University Jasper Campus to manage their cropland. A steering committee comprised of many different organizations in the area has been set up and the partnership has been named the VUJC Land Stewardship Initiative. Some of the goals of the project are to promote soil health to the community and to develop a respected research and education area.

Field days and others educational events will be held on the land soon. To learn more about this project, click here.

Midwest Cover Crops Guide Now Available

The Midwest Cover Crops Field Guide is now available for free from the Dubois County SWCD. Producers who want to prevent soil erosion, improve nutrient cycling, sustain theri soils, and protect the environment have been returning to a avry old practice: planting cover crops.

Although farmers have been using cover crops for centuries, today's producers are part of a generation that has little experience with them. As they rediscover the role that cover crops can play in sustainable farming systems, many growers find they lack the experience and information necessary to take advantage of all the potential benefits cover crops can offer. That inexperience can lead to costly mistakes. This guide will help you effectively select, grow, and use cover crops in your farming systems. While this guide isn't the final word on cover crops, it is meant to be a useful reference.

The guide was written by members of the Midwest Cover Crops Council. A limited number of the field guides are available, so stop by the office to pick up your free copy today before supplies run out!

USDA Warns of Fradulent Letters to Producers

Several Indiana producers have received a fax of a letter claiming to be from the USDA's Procurement Office. The letter states that the person it is addressed to needs to update financial information in order to continue receiving payments. The letter asks the producer to fax in bank account information to a fax number provided on the letter. If you have received this letter, DO NOT SEND IN ANY INFORMATION. The letter is a fraud and sending personal banking information to them could lead to identity theft. Dubois County producers who believe they have received this letter are asked to please call the office to let us know at 812-482-1171 x3.
